(AP Photo/David Guttenfelder, File)

(AP) ? Two years after Japan's nuclear plant disaster, an international team of experts said Thursday that residents of areas hit by the highest doses of radiation face an increased cancer risk so small it probably won't be detectable.

In fact, experts calculated that increase at about 1 extra percentage point added to a Japanese infant's lifetime cancer risk.

"The additional risk is quite small and will probably be hidden by the noise of other (cancer) risks like people's lifestyle choices and statistical fluctuations," said Richard Wakeford of the University of Manchester, one of the authors of the report. "It's more important not to start smoking than having been in Fukushima."

The report was issued by the World Health Organization, which asked scientists to study the health effects of the disaster in Fukushima, a rural farming region.

On March 11, 2011, an earthquake and tsunami knocked out the Fukushima plant's power and cooling systems, causing meltdowns in three reactors and spewing radiation into the surrounding air, soil and water. The most exposed populations were directly under the plumes of radiation in the most affected communities in Fukushima, which is about 150 miles (240 kilometers) north of Tokyo.

In the report, the highest increases in risk are for people exposed as babies to radiation in the most heavily affected areas. Normally in Japan, the lifetime risk of developing cancer of an organ is about 41 percent for men and 29 percent for women. The new report said that for infants in the most heavily exposed areas, the radiation from Fukushima would add about 1 percentage point to those numbers.

Experts had been particularly worried about a spike in thyroid cancer, since radioactive iodine released in nuclear accidents is absorbed by the thyroid, especially in children. After the Chernobyl disaster, about 6,000 children exposed to radiation later developed thyroid cancer because many drank contaminated milk after the accident.

In Japan, dairy radiation levels were closely monitored, but children are not big milk drinkers there.

The WHO report estimated that women exposed as infants to the most radiation after the Fukushima accident would have a 70 percent higher chance of getting thyroid cancer in their lifetimes. But thyroid cancer is extremely rare and one of the most treatable cancers when caught early. A woman's normal lifetime risk of developing it is about 0.75 percent. That number would rise by 0.5 under the calculated increase for women who got the highest radiation doses as infants.

Wakeford said the increase may be so small it will probably not be observable.

For people beyond the most directly affected areas of Fukushima, Wakeford said the projected cancer risk from the radiation dropped dramatically. "The risks to everyone else were just infinitesimal."

David Brenner of Columbia University in New York, an expert on radiation-induced cancers, said that although the risk to individuals is tiny outside the most contaminated areas, some cancers might still result, at least in theory. But they'd be too rare to be detectable in overall cancer rates, he said.

Brenner said the numerical risk estimates in the WHO report were not surprising. He also said they should be considered imprecise because of the difficulty in determining risk from low doses of radiation. He was not connected with the WHO report.

Some experts said it was surprising that any increase in cancer was even predicted.

"On the basis of the radiation doses people have received, there is no reason to think there would be an increase in cancer in the next 50 years," said Wade Allison, an emeritus professor of physics at Oxford University, who also had no role in developing the new report. "The very small increase in cancers means that it's even less than the risk of crossing the road," he said.

WHO acknowledged in its report that it relied on some assumptions that may have resulted in an overestimate of the radiation dose in the general population.

Gerry Thomas, a professor of molecular pathology at Imperial College London, accused the United Nations health agency of hyping the cancer risk.

"It's understandable that WHO wants to err on the side of caution, but telling the Japanese about a barely significant personal risk may not be helpful," she said.

Thomas said the WHO report used inflated estimates of radiation doses and didn't properly take into account Japan's quick evacuation of people from Fukushima.

"This will fuel fears in Japan that could be more dangerous than the physical effects of radiation," she said, noting that people living under stress have higher rates of heart problems, suicide and mental illness.

In Japan, Norio Kanno, the chief of Iitate village, in one of the regions hardest hit by the disaster, harshly criticized the WHO report on Japanese public television channel NHK, describing it as "totally hypothetical."

Many people who remain in Fukushima still fear long-term health risks from the radiation, and some refuse to let their children play outside or eat locally grown food.

Some restrictions have been lifted on a 12-mile (20-kilometer) zone around the nuclear plant. But large sections of land in the area remain off-limits. Many residents aren't expected to be able to return to their homes for years.

Kanno accused the report's authors of exaggerating the cancer risk and stoking fear among residents.

"I'm enraged," he said.

EU moves closer to imposing caps on banker bonuses

BRUSSELS/LONDON (Reuters) - The European parliament and EU states could agree on Wednesday to impose caps on bankers' bonuses, a measure that would channel public fury at financial sector greed, but which opponents say marks a reckless overreach by Brussels into private pay deals.

Negotiations to introduce a cap on bankers' bonuses in the European Union resume on Wednesday, a week after European lawmakers and ambassadors from countries failed to reach a deal. A majority of states in the 27-member bloc would have to support a measure passed by the European parliament to make it law.

Limits to bankers' pay are popular on a continent still struggling to emerge from the ruins of a 2008 financial crisis. Lavish pay is blamed for encouraging bankers to take excessive risks, destabilizing banks that then needed to be bailed out.

Banks and industry lobbyists have strongly resisted bonus caps. They say such limits would only force banks to hike base pay to keep staff, making wage bills less flexible.

Britain in particular is wary of any measure that might hurt the City of London, the continent's financial capital, with 144,000 banking staff and many more in related jobs.

But European lawmakers see a cap - possibly limiting bonuses to double base salary - as the only way to rein in runaway pay, reduce incentives for risk and make banks safer.

"A cap is the only way we will see bonus restraint," said Arlene McCarthy, the British member of the European Parliament who pushed for pay reform. "The parliament is not prepared to budge. Legislators have got fed up because they don't see any restraint in the bonus culture."

Talks between EU country ambassadors about the rules broke up last week amid clashes over how far to go. But tougher rules seem certain.

"There will definitely be a bonus cap," said one official. "It's just a question of how much."

A decision is not expected before 1800 GMT and there is a possibility that it might be deferred for more negotiations.

Britain, anxious to protect a sector that accounts for one tenth of its economy, is trying to dilute the impact of the cap with proposals that would allow higher bonuses if they were paid in share options.

Nearly 700,000 people work in financial and professional services in London. About 27 billion pounds ($41 billion) of bonuses have been spent over the last decade on real estate in the British capital, according to data compiled for Reuters by property firm Savills.

"If implemented, the new pay restrictions would lead to an exodus of bankers and traders to Switzerland and the Far East," Norman Lamont, a former finance minister from Britain's ruling Conservative party, wrote in the Daily Telegraph.

"Not to put too fine a point on it, the bonus cap is a piece of economic lunacy that reflects tellingly on why it was a huge mistake giving the pointless hybrid parliament in Brussels any legislative powers at all."

Many in banking argue that such reform will do little to lower pay in finance, where head-hunters say some annual packages in London approach five million pounds.

MARKET-DRIVEN

"This will only change the way that pay is structured," said Andrew Breach, a head-hunter at Michael Page, which recruits traders and other bankers. "This is not the civil service. This is a market driven industry. If you want people to make profit, then you need to reward them."

An earlier attempt to limit bankers' pay with an EU law forcing financiers to defer bonus payments over up to five years merely prompted lenders to increase base salaries.

However McCarthy, the European lawmaker, said it will be harder for banks to raise base pay this time around. The bonus rules will come as part of wider legislation setting higher capital standards for banks, increasing their costs and curbing freedom to hike salaries.

Hedge funds and private equity firms will be excluded from such curbs although they face restrictions on pay later this year under another EU law.

Bankers who spoke to Reuters are worried about the law but reluctant, like many of their employers, to speak openly about the reform.

The restrictions planned by Brussels, which could come into force from the beginning of next year, may, however, be overtaken by events in an industry where slack activity has already driven down most bonuses to twice salary or lower.

Having peaked in 2008 at 11.5 billion pounds ($17.40 billion), the bonus pool in London fell to 4.4 billion pounds last year, according to research by the Centre for Economics and Business Research. It predicts that pool will be just 1.5 billion pounds this year and fall further in the future.

On Wall Street, by contrast, the securities industry's bonus pool was expected to total $20 billion last year with the average cash bonus rising an estimated nine percent to almost $121,900, New York state's comptroller said this week.

The rosier climate for banking in the United States and Asia combined with the bonus cap from Brussels could be the final straw for some bankers.

"We have been talking for years about the economy and the regulatory environment here potentially moving people abroad and we haven't really seen it. But this might be enough to push a lot of people off the ledges," said one London-based headhunter. ($1 = 0.6618 British pounds)

Children with autism show increased positive social behaviors when animals are present

Feb. 27, 2013 ? The presence of an animal can significantly increase positive social behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), according to research published February 20 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Marguerite E O'Haire and colleagues from the University of Queensland, Australia.

The authors compared how 5-13 year old children with ASD interacted with adults and typically-developing peers in the presence of two guinea pigs compared to toys. They found that in the presence of animals, children with ASD demonstrated more social behaviors like talking, looking at faces and making physical contact. They were also more receptive to social advances from their peers in the presence of the animals than they were when playing with toys. The presence of animals also increased instances of smiling and laughing, and reduced frowning, whining and crying behaviors in children with ASD more than having toys did.

Previous studies have shown that people are more likely to receive overtures of friendship from strangers when walking a dog than when walking alone, and similar effects have been observed for people holding smaller animals like rabbits or turtles. The authors suggest that this 'social lubricant' effect of animals on human social interactions can be particularly important for individuals with socio-emotional disabilities.

According to the authors, the ability of an animal to help children with ASD connect to adults may help foster interactions with therapists, teachers or other adult figures. They add that animal-assisted interventions may have applications in the classroom as well, saying "For children with ASD, the school classroom can be a stressful and overwhelming environment due to social challenges and peer victimization. If an animal can reduce this stress or artificially change children's perception of the classroom and its occupants, then a child with ASD may feel more at ease and open to social approach behaviors."

Power Matters Alliance garners support from BlackBerry, NEC, TI and ZTE

Another Mobile World Congress, another round of highfalutin' talk surrounding the concept of wireless power. We already witnessed a consumer approach by PowerbyProxi, and now we're hearing that the Power Matters Alliance is getting a second wind as well. The self-proclaimed "leading ecosystem and standard for wireless power" took to Boston-area Starbucks locations last fall, and now it has notched support from BlackBerry, NEC, Texas Instruments, ZTE and dozens more. There's still no word on whether all of these factions are going to bite the bullet and come together in order to actually make some progress that consumers can appreciate, but hey -- we've got nothing but time, right?

How A Teacher Turned To Technology To Solve A Thorny Problem And Raised $100K

Screen Shot 2013-02-26 at 11.32.03 AMThe clincher, the thing that made Quick Key go viral, was a poorly-lit video of an excitable guy holding his iPhone up to a Scantron page, one of those test pages you used to fill out in school. He thumbs through page after page, making comments on students' performance as the app scans the page and instantly reports a grade. The video was amazingly compelling. The creator, Walter O. Duncan IV, can barely contain his excitement. His app looked great, it worked seamlessly, and the video struck a nerve with students and teachers, pocketing 260,000 views on YouTube and popping up on the front page of Reddit.

Lowe's 4Q net income tops expectations

NEW YORK (AP) ? Home improvement retailer Lowe's Cos. credits cleanup efforts after Superstorm Sandy and its new pricing strategy for fourth-quarter earnings that surpassed Wall Street expectations.

The results are a sign that people are beginning to feel better about spending money on their homes as the housing market slowly recovers. Analysts will be watching Lowe's larger rival Home Depot's earnings report on Tuesday to see if its results show a similar story.

Lowe's CEO Robert Niblock said the company is seeing a pickup in spending even in areas of the country hit hardest by the housing slump, like Florida, Arizona and California.

"Rising home values have given homeowners additional confidence in spending on their homes," Niblock said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Lowe's net income fell 11 percent from last year's quarter, which included an extra week of revenue. Its earnings forecast for the year was below expectations but its revenue projection beat the consensus.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe's has revamped its pricing structure, offering what it says are permanent low prices on many items across the store instead of fleeting discounts. It has also focused on hiring more workers and improving its inventory. In January it said it planned to hire 45,000 seasonal workers ahead of its busy spring season and add 9,000 part time employees on a permanent basis.

In a call with analysts, Chief Customer Officer Greg Bridgeford said the pricing strategy helped spur strong sales of cabinets and countertops, tools and outdoor power equipment.

During the quarter, the number of transactions fell 6.9 percent, mainly due to the extra week in the quarter a year ago. But average ticket rose 2.1 percent to $62.37.

Lowe's net income totaled $288 million, or 26 cents per share, for the three months ended Feb. 1. That's down from $322 million, or 26 cents per share, a year ago. Analysts expected 23 cents per share, according to FactSet.

There were 11 percent fewer shares outstanding in the latest quarter than a year ago. That increases the value of each share. An extra week in the quarter last year had boosted year-ago earnings by 5 cents per share.

Revenue fell 5 percent to $11.05 billion from $11.63 billion. Analysts expected $10.85 billion. Revenue in stores open at least one year rose 1.9 percent. The measure is a key gauge of a retailer's fiscal health because it excludes stores that open or close during the year.

Morningstar analyst Peter Wahlstrom said the quarter was generally good and in line with his expectations, helped by better gross margins ? the amount of each dollar in revenue a company actually keeps ? and a lower share count.

Standard & Poor analyst Michael Souers kept his "Sell" recommendation on the stock.

"While we see a modest recovery in housing, we see rising interest rates as a threat to home refinancing, a key driver of remodeling," he said.

For the fiscal year, net income rose 7 percent to $1.96 billion, or $1.69 per share, from $1.84 billion, or $1.43 per share. Revenue edged up to $50.52 billion from $50.21 billion last year.

Lowe's, which operates 1,754 stores in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, expects fiscal 2013 net income of $2.05 per share. Analysts expect $2.10 per share.

The company expects revenue to rise 4 percent, implying revenue of $52.54 billion. Analysts expect $51.69 billion.

Shares slipped 2 cents to $37.65 in morning trading Monday. They have traded in a 52-week range of $24.76 to $39.98.

UFC 157 prelims: Dennis Bermudez, Matt Grice deliver Fight of the Year candidate

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- UFC 157's preliminary card started with a bang and ended with a snoozer on Saturday.

Dennis Bermudez took a tight split decision in a fight that will go down as a fight of the year candidate. He won it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 over Matt Grice.

Bermudez fell into full mount early in the round and rained punches down on Grice's head, but Grice got out and came back late in the round by leveling Bermudez with a left hook.

But it's the third round of the fight that the MMA world will remember. Bermudez threw everything but the kitchen sink at Grice, but Grice hung in. He continued to throw kicks and punches at Bermudez right up until the horn sounded and a grateful crowd in Anaheim came to its feet.

?That was insane. Somewhere around the second round I woke up and thought 'Oh, I?m in a fight, I think I am in California somewhere'," Bermudez said. "If he?d given me a reason, maybe I would have quit. I had that battle inside me where I maybe could have [quit] but I won that battle and from there got back into the fight."

Brendan Schaub used takedowns, and little else, to beat Lavar Johnson 30-27 on all the judges cards in the final fight of the prelims. With the crowd booing, Schaub repeatedly took down Johnson, who had little takedown defense.

Michael Chiesa continued his unbeaten streak with a rear naked choked of Anton Kuivanen. Chiesa rolled through to get into perfect position. He sunk in a rear naked choke that turned Kuivanen's face red. Kuivanen tapped at 2:29 in the second round.

Sam Stout managed another decision win, taking the split 29-28, 28-29 over Caros Fodor. 14 of his fights have ended with judges cards being read, and this decision put his record to 19-8.

Kenny Robertson made quick work of Brock Jardine. He stopped him with a knee bar at 2:57 in the first round.

"Sometime you gotta go with what you are handed. He was on top of me but didn?t have a great posture," Robertson said after the fight. "I saw the opening, so I grabbed his leg and hyper-extended it and he verbally submitted. I?ll take it. It is a first round win in the UFC."

For the card's opener, Nah-Shon Burrell and Yuri Villefort put on a thrilling bout that ended with Burrell taking the decision 30-27, 29-28, 29-28. Villefort had a strong first round, grabbing Burrell for two different submission attempts. But Burrell fought back in the second round, busting up Villefort's face with smart boxing. In the final round, Villefort grabbed a heel hook, but left his face open. Burrell used the opportunity to punch Villefort several time.

After the thriller by Burrell and Villefort, Neil Magny and Jon Manley's bout was a let down for the crowd in Anaheim. They spent much of the bout in a clinch, with Manley trying for a takedown that never came. Magny took the bout with better striking as the bout wore on.

Zynga Closes Baltimore Office, Consolidates in Texas, New York

zynga logoZynga is cutting costs further by closing its Baltimore studio and consolidating its presence in New York City and Texas. The moves follow a series of cost-cutting efforts that saw the closure of the Boston and Tokyo offices along with layoffs for about 5 percent of the company’s workforce. Those moves allowed the company to save $25 million last quarter. In today’s changes, Zynga is consolidating the McKinney, Texas office, which came out of the very successful Newtoy acquisition back in 2010. The company is?moving the 30 or so employees there to Dallas, which is an hour away. The studio’s leaders and Newtoy’s founders Paul and David Bettner left in the last year as their “With Friends” line of games had a strong run under Zynga. Zynga is also closing the Baltimore studio, which was behind CityVille 2. Zynga recently shut that game down after it didn’t live up to expectations as a follow-up to the original CityVille. The company is also closing down one of its Austin offices and moving those employees to North Austin. Zynga’s New York City offices will also get moved to the company’s mobile studio in the city. The company says that fewer than 1 percent of the company’s employees will be affected. Zynga chief operations officer David Ko said in a statement: ?In an effort to leverage resources as we focus on creating franchises and driving profitability, Zynga has made changes to four of our US offices. We are closing the McKinney, Texas and downtown Austin offices and relocating those teams near-by to our existing Dallas and North Austin offices. And, we will be consolidating our NYC offices to move staff to our NYC mobile studio. Also, as a part of today?s changes, the Baltimore studio will be closed. While these decisions are always difficult, these steps will affect approximately 1% of our workforce and enable us to focus our resources on the most significant growth opportunities.?

Justices asked to void marriage law provision

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration is asking the Supreme Court to declare unconstitutional a section of federal law that only recognizes male-female marriages.

In a filing with the court, the administration says Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act denies legally married same-sex couples many federal benefits that are available only to legally married heterosexual couples. Federal tax and Social Security survivor's benefits are among them.

In its brief, the administration said the provision "violates the fundamental constitutional guarantee of equal protection."

The brief was filed as the justices prepare to hear arguments next month in a challenge to the 1996 law.

President Barack Obama last year said he personally supports gay marriage. He said in last month's inaugural address that the law should treat gay people like anyone else.

Murphy: Coach's challenge could be in NHL's future

Mike Murphy, the National Hockey League's senior vice president of Hockey Operations, isn't ruling out the possibility that one day -- possibly soon -- the concept of a coach's challenge could exist in the NHL.

However, Murphy also warns that the concept is not one that can be adopted without clearly defined criteria for what a coach would be allowed to challenge and what elements of the challenged play would be admissible in the review process.

"Sure, I think that there is a real possibility it could happen, but you'd have to sit down with a group of smart people and you'd have to go through just about every type of play you'd want to allow a challenge for," Murphy told NHL.com. "It can't be used as a tactic. That's a concern. It has to be a legitimate play that has been defined into the coach's challenge rule. Mainly, it's goals."

The concept of a coach's challenge was first brought up by Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon at the November 2010 general managers meeting in Toronto. Tallon proposed allowing coaches one challenge per game in order to contest a disputed goal.

Murphy said there was a long discussion about it at that 2010 meeting; but, ultimately, the concept generated little support.

When Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene scored a goal after he was clearly offside on Monday against the Nashville Predators, the topic became front and center yet again. Predators goalie Chris Mason, who was in goal on the play, said following the game that he thinks the NHL should adopt a coach's challenge to examine such plays.

QUOTEBOOK

"As Buffalo struggled, I'll be honest with you, I don't think he had any thought of him becoming the coach there. He talks with Darcy [Regier] on a daily basis about certain players and guys getting called up, so when he got the call from him [Wednesday] he thought it was another routine call until they told him he was coaching in Toronto. At that point I think he was in shock." -- Brian Rolston talking about his brother Ron becoming the interim coach of the Buffalo Sabres

"The recognition of how the game is going, [Patrick Kane] is reading off of that. It's almost like the quarterbacks and their reads, check downs. He's thinking, 'It's not there, it's not there, so I've gotta be there.' That's where I'm seeing progression and maturity and the realization that the game isn't always going to be black and white, up and down. That comes with experience." -- Blackhawks television analyst Eddie Olczyk describing the growth he has seen in Patrick Kane's game this season

Tallon told NHL.com that he would reintroduce the suggestion of a challenge system when the GMs meet on March 20 if he gets more support for it. He labeled it "a dead issue" when it was initially shot down at the November 2010 meeting.

Murphy thinks challenges will be discussed next month, but is unsure of the amount of traction the conversation will generate because of the variables involved.

"I have no problem if they decided to do it, but I think it would be something that we would really have to have strong criteria on what is and what isn't allowed," Murphy said. "Go through a lot of examples -- offside, icing, goals -- an array of plays that would help us determine what is and what isn't [allowed to be challenged].

"I would think you'd want to challenge the goals. Goals are so important. Right now, we look at all the goals anyway to see if the puck went into the net in a legal fashion."

Murphy said determining if the Duchene goal should have been allowed would be easy with a coach's challenge in place. In that scenario, a coach would have to challenge the play and the refs would then have to get on the phone with personnel in the Toronto video review room to examine the call on the ice before an official ruling was made.

However, without a strict criteria to follow, Murphy said problems could arise in some situations, citing the example of a goal being scored after contact is made with the goaltender.

The disallowed goal in the Ottawa-Montreal game on Feb. 3 -- when Senators forward Jakob Silfverberg was called for goalie interference on Canadiens goalie Carey Price -- was the example Murphy used. That ruling negated a would-be goal by Andre Benoit.

Murphy questioned how the video review personnel would be able to interpret interference.

"If you watch the Silfverberg play in Montreal, there was contact, but was it severe? No, it was a brush," Murphy said. "If they come to video review, I'd say, 'What is my criteria?' Did he touch him? Yeah. Do I think it affected [the goalie]? That's opinion. You have to make sure you can make a decision on this play that would benefit the game.

"It can't be subjective," he added. "It can't be, 'Oh, come on, you know he interfered with him.' You have to have definitive evidence. On the Silfverberg one, they'll go crazy and say, 'How can you call it a good goal, he brushed the goalie?' What are we allowing here? Some contact? Light contact? No contact? It really becomes a delicate matter when you have to define what can you do with coach's challenge.

"There is a lot of contact in the crease. Much of it is incidental. We can't interpret interference."

Murphy also said the infrastructure of the challenge system would need to be determined. Would it be an unlimited-challenge system? Or, would it be a limited number of challenges, similar to the system currently used by the National Football League? Also, would the agreed-upon challenge structure be limited to scoring plays, or would it cover other calls?

Murphy would not be in favor of an expanded scope of reviewable plays, believing it would be interfering with the credibility of the officials on the ice and, "we can't start making judgments from the video room. That would be very wrong."

"[The coach's challenge] is a legitimate subject, but it's a tough one," he later added. "It's easy to sit at home watching a game and say, 'That play is unfair.' When you review it, there has to be very strict criteria as to what you're going to review."

Rolston on Rolston

Buffalo Sabres interim coach Ron Rolston used to talk to his younger brother, former NHL All-Star Brian Rolston, about the good and bad tendencies Brian saw from the various coaches he encountered during his 18 years in the NHL. It was all part of Ron's studies to become a coach in the NHL, a goal he achieved Wednesday when he was named as the interim replacement for Lindy Ruff.

"He's getting thrown into the fire for sure, but he's definitely qualified," Brian Rolston told NHL.com in a phone interview. "I think that was his ultimate goal, to get to the National Hockey League, and it came sooner than he probably thought. But, I told him he's already prepared for the job. He's got the awareness already."

Brian wouldn't call his brother a defensive-minded coach, but he did say the Sabres should expect to have a coach who will hound them about their defensive responsibilities.

"I know that he knows being responsible defensively wins above a run and gun game," Brian said. "He's a super prepared guy. He'll have his team prepared, and that's all you can ask for."

Parise starting to see a familiar forecheck

Minnesota Wild forward Zach Parise is very much aware how far an aggressive, attacking forecheck can take a team. He played in the Stanley Cup Final last season partly because his former team, the New Jersey Devils, suffocated the Florida Panthers, Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers with that type of forechecking system.

Parise told NHL.com that he's starting to see a similar type of forecheck produce similar results for the Wild, who are 4-1-1 over their last six games.

"When I was there [in New Jersey] we had it down to a T, where we knew every time our route and where we could go," Parise said. "I think we're getting there here. We try to forecheck pretty similar. That's just how we do it. I don't think we're at the point where we're doing it as well as we can, but I think it's getting better."

Parise said earlier in the season the Wild were guilty of still being in summer hockey mode.

"We didn't want to dump the puck; we wanted to try to skate it in and we were turning it over a lot," he said. "When you're doing that you never generate anything. You keep turning it over and they keep coming back at you. You're chasing the puck."

He's noticed a change over the last several games, in particular the last two, wins against the Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers. Minnesota scored three goals in each game; enough offense, according to Parise, for the Wild to win on most nights provided they continue to play their stingy brand of defense.

"When you've been a part of something that you know works so well, you want to try to share some of that experience you had," Parise said. "I know it's not always fun, constantly rimming the puck, but it works. For us, now we're starting to see those results. It's hard when you're not generating anything. You want to play fancy hockey and think that's the answer, but it's not. You have to see those results and we're starting to."

Pietrangelo: Blues need to balance

St. Louis defenseman Alex Pietrangelo used the term "as close to perfect" to describe the Blues' recent 3-0 road trip through Detroit, Calgary and Vancouver -- when they combined to outscore the Red Wings, Flames and Canucks by a 12-8 margin.

The Blues have since lost two in a row despite giving up only a combined three goals to San Jose and Colorado. The Avalanche beat St. Louis 1-0 on Thursday by scoring with 16.4 seconds left in overtime.

"Now that we've sharpened up defensively we have to find a way to use that strong defensive game and channel it toward the strong offense, creating more offense, the 'D' jumping up, things like that," Pietrangelo told NHL.com. "Right now we're trying to find that balance."

It isn't coming easy, and Pietrangelo said it's difficult to pinpoint why, but at least the Blues appear to be on track defensively -- a trademark for this team last season after Ken Hitchcock took over 13 games in.

The Blues allowed four or more goals in only six of their 69 games under Hitchcock last season; they allowed four or more in six of their first 12 games this season, but haven't surrendered that many in any game since.

Pietrangelo said now their job is to figure out how to turn that good defense into enough offense to win -- something they did so well last season, when despite finishing 21st in the NHL in offense (2.51 goals per game) they still put up 109 points because they were by far the best defensive team in the League (1.89 goals against per game).

"It's the little things -- stopping in front, banging in rebounds, putting more pucks to the net, us D-men getting pucks in easier," Pietrangelo said. "When we're playing real well we're putting up 40 shots a game and we might only score two or three goals, but with our defensive game that's enough to win. Once we're able to piece it together I think we're going to do pretty well."

Boyes finds new home on Long Island

Brad Boyes understands his role with the New York Islanders, and it's helped him find a new lease on his career. It's quite different feeling from what he experienced with the Buffalo Sabres last season, when Boyes was nothing more than a bit player who wasn't sure what his role was -- or if he had one at all.

Brad Boyes

Right Wing - NYI

GOALS: 4 | ASST: 9 | PTS: 13
SOG: 35 | +/-: -9

"As soon as I first got here I felt comfortable; I felt like I had a role and I felt part of the team and that was something that was a big change," Boyes told NHL.com. "I knew, for the most part, where I stood. It's definitely been a big change from last year.

"I was just more in limbo [last season], didn't know exactly where I stood."

Boyes was promised an opportunity to play a top-six role when he signed his one-year, $1 million contract with the Islanders this past summer. He's making good on it largely because he hasn't squandered the chance to produce on the top line alongside John Tavares and Matt Moulson.

Boyes has 13 points through 17 games after scoring only 23 points in 65 games last season. He is, however, a minus-9.

"I feel like I have an opportunity again," Boyes said. "That's one of the reasons why I came here and it's working out. I'm really just trying to take advantage of it. I'm having fun again, feeling the puck, feeling like I can make plays."

Odds and ends

With Lindy Ruff out in Buffalo, Nashville coach Barry Trotz takes over as the longest-tenured coach in the NHL. Trotz is the only coach in Predators history and got the job on Aug. 6, 1997. He is the only coach still in his job from the 20th century.

Mike Babcock (July 15, 2005) is second behind Trotz, followed by Vancouver's Alain Vigneault (June 20, 2006), Boston's Claude Julien (June 21, 2007 and San Jose's Todd McLellan (June 11, 2008). Rounding out the top-10 in longevity are Chicago's Joel Quenneville (Oct. 16, 2008), Pittsburgh's Dan Bylsma (Feb. 15, 2009), New York Rangers' John Tortorella (Feb. 23, 2009), Colorado's Joe Sacco (June 4, 2009) and Phoenix's Dave Tippett (Sept. 24, 2009).

A total of 17 coaches are in either their first or second seasons with their current clubs.

The Chicago Blackhawks announced Friday that they sold all the tickets to their sixth annual summer convention in a matter of hours. The convention takes place July 26-28 at Hilton Chicago, but getting a ticket is obviously going to be difficult now.

Four of the top five scorers in the NHL entering play Friday are former No. 1 draft picks -- Sidney Crosby (2005), Steven Stamkos (2008), John Tavares (2009) and Patrick Kane (2007).

Sunspots: Huge and growing fast, says NASA

Sunspots of this size could produce major solar flares, which could disrupt communications on Earth. The latest sunspot is six Earth diameters across.

By Tariq Malik,?Space.com / February 21, 2013

The bottom two black spots on the sun, known as sunspots, appeared quickly over the course of Feb. 19-20, 2013. These two sunspots are part of the same system and are over six Earths across.

A colossal sunspot on the surface of the sun is large enough to swallow six Earths whole, and could trigger solar flares this week, NASA scientists say.

The giant sunspot was captured on camera by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory as it swelled to enormous proportions over the 48 hours spanning Tuesday and Wednesday (Feb. 19 and 20). SDO is one of several spacecraft that constantly monitor the sun's space weather environment.

"It has grown to over six Earth diameters across, but its full extent is hard to judge since the spot lies on a sphere, not a flat disk," wrote NASA spokeswoman Karen Fox, of the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., in an image description.

The sunspot region is actually a collection of dark blemishes on the surface of the sun that evolved rapidly over the last two days. Sunspots form from shifting magnetic fields at the sun's surface, and are actually cooler than their surrounding solar material.

According to Fox, some of the intense magnetic fields in the sunspot region are pointing in opposite directions, making it ripe for solar activity.

"This is a fairly unstable configuration that scientists know can lead to eruptions of radiation on the sun called solar flares," Fox explained.

The sun is currently in the midst of an active phase of its 11-year solar weather cycle and is expected to reach peak activity sometime this year. The current sun weather cycle is known as Solar Cycle 24.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory launched in 2010 and is just one of a fleet of spacecraft keeping close watch on the sun for signs of solar flares, eruptions and other space weather events.

Trump Twitter mystery! Who hacked The Donald?

In what appears to be the latest in a minor wave of attacks on Twitter accounts belonging to out-sized corporate entities, an out-of-character tweet from Donald Trump's verified account set the Internet abuzz, and then disappeared, shortly before noon ET on Thursday.

"These hoes think they classy, well that's the class I'm skippen," read the suspect remark issued from @realDonaldTrump. It was a glaring non sequitur following tweets such as "Republicans must be careful with immigration?don?t give our country away," and "Wow, Macy's numbers just in-Trump is doing better than ever ? thanks for your great support!"

"Yes, obviously the account has been hacked and we are looking for the perpetrator," Rhona Graff, senior vice president, assistant to the president of the Trump Organization, told NBC News via email.

This confirmation was quickly echoed by Trump himself, in a tweet that read, "My Twitter has been seriously hacked ? and we are looking for the perpetrators."

Cut off after a single rogue tweet, the Trump Twitter anomaly was far shorter than the Burger King and Jeep takeovers earlier this week. On Monday, Burger King's Twitter account was hacked and renamed McDonalds, and over the course of a hour, sent out 53 tweets (and garnered 73,421 retweets) making light of the situation. The Tuesday attack on Jeep's Twitter account ? which included the erroneous announcement that the car maker had been taken over by Cadillac ? ceased after just 10 minutes and 13 tweets.

Soon after @Jeep regained control, the Twitter accounts of MTV and BET appeared to be compromised. The MTV account tweeted claims the network had been taken over by BET, and BET tweeted it was now owned by MTV. This turned out to be a publicity stunt by the networks, both owned by Viacom. As NBC News reported on Tuesday, the account of a PR representative warned of the hack ahead of time on Twitter and then both MTV and BET copped to the scheme after the "hack."

NBC News has asked the Trump Organization how Trump was able to regain control of his Twitter account so quickly, and will update this story if we receive a response.

Small jet crash kills 5 in eastern Georgia

THOMSON, Ga. (AP) ? Authorities were investigating after a small jet crashed off the end of a runway after landing in eastern Georgia, killing five people and injuring two.

Thomson-McDuffie County Sheriff Logan Marshall said the jet crashed after 8 p.m. Wednesday. He said the two survivors were taken to area hospitals but did not have information on their conditions. He said the identities of those killed were being withheld pending notification of family members.

The Hawker Beechcraft 390/Premier I departed from Nashville, Tenn., when it crashed just after landing at the Thomson-McDuffie County Airport, about 30 miles west of Augusta, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said in an email.

Seven people were aboard, she told The Associated Press in the email. She told The Augusta Chronicle (http://bit.ly/WbvMGa) that the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate and determine the probable cause of the crash.

The Augusta Chronicle cited Assistant County Fire Chief Stephen Sewell as saying there were at least two survivors identified as a pilot and a passenger. But he provided no additional information about those aboard.

Bodies of the five people who died have been taken to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation lab in Decatur, where autopsies were planned, GBI spokesman John Bankhead said Thursday morning. The GBI worked with the sheriff's office to recover the bodies, as they sometimes do at accident scenes.

The newspaper also said a brush fire flared near the crash scene, quoting witnesses who reported power outages that prompted a utility to send workers to the site.

The plane was on a flight from John Tune Airport in Nashville, Tenn., to the Thomson-McDuffie airport, Bergen said in her email, adding the aircraft is registered to a company based in Wilmington, Del.

The Thomson McDuffie-Regional Airport is the largest general aviation facility in the Central Savannah River Area ? a 13 county region in east Georgia and western South Carolina, according to the airport's website. It serves Augusta, Thomson and the Reynolds Plantation/Lake Oconee Resort area.

Study: Better TV might improve kids' behavior

SEATTLE (AP) ? Teaching parents to switch channels from violent shows to educational TV can improve preschoolers' behavior, even without getting them to watch less, a study found.

The results were modest and faded over time, but may hold promise for finding ways to help young children avoid aggressive, violent behavior, the study authors and other doctors said.

"It's not just about turning off the television. It's about changing the channel. What children watch is as important as how much they watch," said lead author Dr. Dimitri Christakis, a pediatrician and researcher at Seattle Children's Research Institute.

The research was to be published online Monday by the journal Pediatrics.

The study involved 565 Seattle parents, who periodically filled out TV-watching diaries and questionnaires measuring their child's behavior.

Half were coached for six months on getting their 3-to-5-year-old kids to watch shows like "Sesame Street" and "Dora the Explorer" rather than more violent programs like "Power Rangers." The results were compared with kids whose parents who got advice on healthy eating instead.

At six months, children in both groups showed improved behavior, but there was a little bit more improvement in the group that was coached on their TV watching.

By one year, there was no meaningful difference between the two groups overall. Low-income boys appeared to get the most short-term benefit.

"That's important because they are at the greatest risk, both for being perpetrators of aggression in real life, but also being victims of aggression," Christakis said.

The study has some flaws. The parents weren't told the purpose of the study, but the authors concede they probably figured it out and that might have affected the results.

Before the study, the children averaged about 1? hours of TV, video and computer game watching a day, with violent content making up about a quarter of that time. By the end of the study, that increased by up to 10 minutes. Those in the TV coaching group increased their time with positive shows; the healthy eating group watched more violent TV.

Nancy Jensen, who took part with her now 6-year-old daughter, said the study was a wake-up call.

"I didn't realize how much Elizabeth was watching and how much she was watching on her own," she said.

Jensen said her daughter's behavior improved after making changes, and she continues to control what Elizabeth and her 2-year-old brother, Joe, watch. She also decided to replace most of Elizabeth's TV time with games, art and outdoor fun.

During a recent visit to their Seattle home, the children seemed more interested in playing with blocks and running around outside than watching TV.

Another researcher who was not involved in this study but also focuses his work on kids and television commended Christakis for taking a look at the influence of positive TV programs, instead of focusing on the impact of violent TV.

"I think it's fabulous that people are looking on the positive side. Because no one's going to stop watching TV, we have to have viable alternatives for kids," said Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston.

GSMA Mobile World Conference: Essential Tips on How to Eat and ...

World Mobile ConferenceNext week, Barcelona will be inundated with a digital waterfall of techies attending the largest mobile conference in the world. The GSMA?Mobile World Conference attracts some 60,000 mobile players including mobile phone and tablet manufacturers, telecom operators, trade associations, service providers, app developers and amateurs developers who are keen to discover the next ?must have? device for 2013.

The #MWC13 is no small event, but despite the deluge of new tech prognostications hitting the interwebs, we?re rather skeptical that our tech friends will take the time to look up from their mobile units to ensure a delicious meal. That?s where we come in. Being that Catavino prides itself on its latest gadgetry, in hopes of taking that next 1 million dollar wine barrel Instagram photo, we?re happy to lend a hand to those in need. Then again, we?re generally happy to help anyone avoid shitty Croquetas?and gut-rot wine.

So here you go, our guide for the ?mobile geek? on how to get the most out of BCN in the coming days.

Wine to relax with

Barcelona is saturated with wine bars, but just because a bar has wine, does not make it good. Our?suggestion, if the bar has their menu (drinks or food) displayed on a plastic sandwich board, run. If it?s located anywhere near a?souvenir?shop, send an #sos and run, hard. What you need is a place that?s respected, quality driven and caters to the international crowd, allowing your nightmares to subside that your team will have to rely on your high school Spanglish.

  • La Vinateria del Call (Barrio: El Gotico): Set in a quaint dark wood cavern, enjoy authentic Catalan food alongside a killer wine list. Sorry no mobile signals here, so you can put away your new 4G headset and try out that old 1.0?communications?device ? I think they call it F2F.
  • La Vinya del?Senyor (Barrio: El Born): Aptly named, ?The Lord?s Vineyard,? this stellar wine bar provides an enormous list of Spanish wines that changes weekly. International wines are also available, but hey, while in Spain, drink Spanish. The added bonus being that checking in on Foursquare will put you next to?the city?s shortest street, Carrer de l?Anisadeta,?a mere 2 meters long. Speaking of, there better be a badge for that!
  • Monovinic (El Example): If you?re looking for the perfect fusion of tech and wine, look no further than Monvinic.?Every day, the Monv?nic team opens a selection of some thirty wines from the four corners of the world, which can be enjoyed by the glass or half glass, and chosen via tablet. If this were a cell phone, it would only exist in your dreams.
  • Bar Zim (Barrio: El Gotico): Now we can?t promise you that more than 3 of you can fit in this tiny little bar, but if you?re looking for an incredibly small place wehre you can discuss the next big app, then this is it. Great wines + good tapas = winning.

Real Beer ? Worth Drinking

Beer BarcelonaThe beer revolution has arrived in Barcelona! Over the past few years, real beer ? not the scary beer that tastes like colored water ? has hit Barcelona with force, which has led to a hop drenched explosion of choices. Ranging from dive bars to top notch brew pubs, you?ve got a fantastic selection to choose from. Here are some of our top choices:

  • Ale Hop (Barrio: El Born): Nestled in one of our favorite neighborhoods in Barcelona, this wee vegan bar (for all you?Silicon?Valley herbivores) hosts one the most personable beer lovers in Barcelona. Friendly staff, cozy ambience, it also boasts of a small back room perfect for meetings, albeit lubed with only the finest suds.?
  • La Cerveteca?(Barrio: El Gotico): Located in the heart of Barcelona, just near the port, it?s where the revolution is claimed to have started. With a small list of choice tapas, and a large selection of bottled beer along with 5 or more rotating taps, the noise level here is a notch higher. Perfect if you need to make sure no one is listening in on your latest innovation.
  • Sf (eSe eFe) (Barrio: Raval):?Run by two beer aficionados from San Francisco, this dive bar (in the good sense) has quickly become the gathering place for hop lovers in the Raval. NOFX on the radio and great beer behind the bar, there really is no reason not to stop by and check in, especially for those Bay Area natives.
  • Mosquito: Great beers, fantastic dumplings, incredibly affordable, you?ll leave with a smile on your face and enough money left over to buy the latest oversized Samsung fablet.

Tapas or ?Brain? Food

Tapas BarcelonaOkay, so let?s be honest, Catalunya doesn?t do Tapas, as that would be mainland Spain?s gig. Off the record, they do fabulous tapas, called Raciones. After a long day on your feet, we imagine that you?ll be dying for food, now! And if you?re biz meeting isn?t until late, normal Spanish dinner time, consider popping over to any of the following locations to get a few nibbles and cocktails in.

  • Quimet & Quimet (Poble Sec): Fourth generation?Quim improvises with hundreds of variations of mini tapas with the ingredients set before him on a steel counter. This is art at its finest and a great way to enjoy canned cuisine, an often overlooked Spanish style. Just a short walk from #MWC13, make sure to enjoy some of their homemade brew.
  • Bar Celta?Pulperia?(El Gotico): If you?re a fan of tender octopus, spicy peppers or a wide range of fried fish, you will not be disappointed with this fab Galician joint. Again, centrally located and incredibly informal, it also happens to be infront of a series of wonderful Basque places that all feature Sidra and Cabrales, an insanly delicious combination.
  • Cal Pep and Tickets: We?re mentioning both of these together as the likelihood of you getting a table is as probable as you getting the Google Nexus 4 in this lifetime. However, we?re all for being rebels and trying. What will it take? You could hope for the best and try to woo the hostess in 140 characters or less despite not making a reservation a year in advance. Cal Pep, on the other hand, is reservation free but extremely popular, so while you wait in line, you can at least do so in style by mastering the lastest Angry Birds levels.
  • Bar Roure: Located in Gracia (barrio renowned for its small familiar bars), Bar Roure is famous for its homemade Vermouth and tapas. Traditional, informal and incredibly popular among locals, don?t be surprised if the wait is long. However, you?re in luck. As this particular barrio won?t be jammed with fellow techies, you can surf the web effortlessly on your MIFI unit.

The World Mobile Congress is an over the top tech event. Many complain that it?s just too long with an overabundance of information, and we wholeheartedly agree; but remember, Barcelona is an amazing city with loads of ways to decompress and relax including: great wines, fantastic foods, and wonderful scenery. If your mobile appetite gets a bit too saturated, please take a break and head out on foot to wander. And remember, disconnect! You need to get out, chat with locals, breathe and enjoy ?reality?. Who knows what you might find around the corner.

Cheers,

Gabriella and Ryan
