Zimmerman wants to delay trial for Martin shooting

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Attorneys for the former neighborhood watch volunteer charged with shooting Trayvon Martin to death on Wednesday asked for more time to prepare his case, saying prosecutors had been slow to turn over evidence.

At the same time, Zimmerman's lead attorney, Mark O'Mara, renewed his request for donations to George Zimmerman's legal defense, which he said could cost up to $1 million.

"The state has virtually unlimited resources to prosecute George," O'Mara said on Zimmerman's defense fund website. "To finance his defense, however, George relies on the generosity of individuals who believe he is innocent."

Spokesman Shawn Vincent said Zimmerman's attorneys want his second-degree murder trial to be moved from June to November. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty.

A hearing in which Zimmerman will argue he was acting in self-defense is scheduled for April. The judge has said that hearing will be at least 45 days before the trial.

Prosecutors did not immediately respond to emails and phone calls about the defense request.

O'Mara said prosecutors had been slow to turn over evidence. As an example, he said someone from State Attorney's Office had removed Martin's cell phone from an evidence locker to have it sent to California for analysis, but the state has refused to give him any information about the agency and the type of tests being run on the phone. He also said prosecutors had made it difficult for O'Mara to get answers to administrative questions from a chief investigative agent and had refused to forward them other information on Martin and a witness.

O'Mara also asked the public to donate more money for his defense, saying on the web site that Zimmerman's defense fund has raised more than $314,000 since he was charged. Of that amount, $95,000 was spent on bail, almost $62,000 was spent on Zimmerman's living expenses during the past eight months and $56,100 was spent on security. The pricey living expenses were the result of Zimmerman having to stay at extended-stay hotels until he could find a place to rent after his bail conditions were changed to restrict him to Seminole County, Fla., according to the statement on the website said.

Deadrin Senat chooses South Florida over South Carolina. What now?

The three star defensive tackle picks the Bulls over the Gamecocks. Where does that leave USC for the 2013 recruiting class?

A little more than a week ago, it appeared as though Immokalee, FL defensive tackle Deadrin Senat was on the brink of committing to South Carolina, but on Tuesday he announced his intention to sign with the South Florida Bulls.

The good news is that the crown jewel of the Gamecocks' defensive line class - Hochston, GA defensive tackle Kelsy Griffin - is already committed to South Carolina. The bad news is that Senat's commitment, paired with reports that Auburn is pulling away with Alabama LB Jonathan Walton, means that South Carolina has a much slimmer margin for error with the remaining targets if they want to finish with a strong class.

Remaining Targets

Keith Bryant, 4 stars 183rd overall, 21st defensive tackle*

Bryant's recruitment has had more twists and turns and To Be Continued... cliffhangers than a J.J. Abrams television series. Bryant originally committed to the Miami Hurricanes, then was thought to be favoring South Carolina after an his unofficial during the weekend of the Georgia game, then decommitted from Miami, and then flaked on his scheduled official visit to South Carolina on January 18th to visit Miami while now naming Florida State as the favorite.

The Gamecocks finally got him back on campus for an official visit last weekend, a trip that Bryant and his family have given rave reviews. Now, Bryant says that his decision is "practically made." Steve Spurrier will be in Florida on Thursday to visit Bryant. The big defensive tackle is expected to announce a final decision on National Signing Day.

Completely unscientific approximation of the probability that Bryant will sign with South Carolina: 50%

Yannick Ngakoue, 4 stars, 315th overall, 18th inside linebacker

For the most part, everything has been quiet with the Mr. Ngakoue since his official visit to South Carolina on January 18th. Yannick was scheduled to visit Miami last weekend but cancelled that visit after his OV to Columbia. G.A. Mangus made the trip to visit Ngakoue in D.C. on January 23rd. Maryland assistant Mike Locksley dropped in on Tuesday. It's expected to come down to those to schools on National Signing Day.

I feel cautiously optimistic about South Carolina's chances of landing Yannick for a pair of reasons:

1) Ngakoue and Gamecock commit Na'Ty Rodgers have bonded during the recruiting process and the pair made their official visit together, which may negate to a certain degree any advantage that Maryland might have by having Ngakoue's teammate, Derwin Gray, already committed to their 2013 class

2) Ngakoue's decision to cancel his official visit to Miami in the wake of his visit to South Carolina logically suggests that something happened on his official visit to Columbia to make him think that he had seen all that he needed to see and didn't need to visit anywhere else.

Completely unscientific approximation of the probability that Ngakoue will sign with South Carolina: 50%

Skai Moore, 3 stars, 385th overall, 28th outside linebacker

Last weekend Moore visited Rutgers, the school to which he was originally committed. Coming out of his January 18th official visit, Moore was naming the Gamecocks as a favorite, but things seem to be up in the air now between a number of schools, including South Carolina, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Moore is currently scheduled to OV to Arkansas this weekend, but he could potentially change those plans and visit the Volunteers.

Completely unscientific approximation of the probability that Moore will sign with South Carolina: 40%

James Hearns, 3 stars, 311th overall, 17th inside linebacker

Since mentioning the Gamecocks as a team of potential interest in the immediate aftermath of having his offer pulled by Florida, not much has happened on the James Hearns front. Keep in mind that academics were the impetus behind his departure from the Gators' recruiting class, so even if he did end up committing to South Carolina, there's a high probability that he would end up needing to be placed in a JUCO or prep school.

Hearns visited Kentucky last weekend and does not currently have plans to visit South Carolina.

Completely unscientific approximation of the probability that Hearns will sign with South Carolina: 20%

Tyrell Lyons, 3 stars, 467th overall, 39th outside linebacker

Though Lyons has been committed to Florida State since February of 2012, his coach at First Coast described his recruitment as "up in the air between the Gamecocks and Seminoles at this point" coming out of his official visit to Columbia last weekend. A final decision from Lyons is expected within the next couple of days.

Completely unscientific approximation of the probability that Lyons will sign with South Carolina: 40%

Jonathan Walton

As alluded to above, most seem to think that Auburn's interest in trying Walton out as something of an h-back on the offensive side of the ball and his proximity to the school will lead to Walton ultimately signing with the Tigers.

Steve Spurrier visited Walton on Tuesday.

Completely unscientific approximation of the probability that Walton will sign with South Carolina: 25%

Keep 'Em Committed

Three star Lithonia, GA defensive and and current South Carolina commitment David Johnson visited Vanderbilt last weekend. For now he's saying that he's still a Gamecock, but he's also saying that he'll have a final decision in the next couple of days.

As of right now, Johnson is the only Gamecock commitment openly considering another school.

Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium review

Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium review

It feels like we've been talking about Office 2013 for a while now -- we first previewed the software back in July, and it's been available as a free beta download ever since. Today, though, it's launching in a more formal way: the final version of Office 2013 is now on sale, as is Office 365 Home Premium, which lets you purchase a subscription to Office 2013 and then install it on up to five computers.

Though you can still buy the software outright, Microsoft has gone out of its way to make subscribing seem like the more attractive option: buying a one-year subscription costs $100 a year and nets you five installs, while the purchase cost is $139 for a single user. To sweeten the deal, Microsoft is giving Office 365 subscribers 60 Skype minutes per month and 20GB of extra SkyDrive storage. Naturally, too, subscribing to the service means you always get the latest software -- a particularly important point for Apple fans still waiting on a new version of Office for Mac. Either way, though, Office 2013 now has an app store, and you can poke around even if you're not a subscriber.

As it is, we've already given you an in-depth walk-through of all the major new features in Office, but we haven't yet gotten to experience it as a subscription, with all our settings following us from one PC to another. But we're still wondering: is it worth shelling out a hundred bones a year for a subscription?

Getting started

Though Office 2013 and Office 365 will both be available to purchase in stores, you won't actually find an installation CD in the box. Even if you buy it from a brick-and-mortar kind of place, you'll only really see a written product key when you tear open the packaging. So, regardless of whether you purchase in stores or online, you'll eventually need to head over to office.com, enter your license number and then proceed to download the software.

As ever, the system requirements are fairly modest: so long as you have 3.5GB of free disk space and an x86 or x64 system clocked at 1GHz or higher, you'll be good to go. DirectX10 graphics are required, along with a minimum resolution of 1,024 x 576. Microsoft also recommends 1GB of RAM for 32-bit systems and 2GB for 64-bit machines.

In any case, once you enter your product key it's smooth sailing. Just sign in with your Microsoft account (you'll have a chance to create one if you're a new user) and verify your country and language. So far so good, right? From that home screen on office.com, you can see how many of your five installations you've used. You can view your payment method, expiration date, billing history and automatic renewal information, if applicable. And, of course, there's a big "install" button, which you'll need to click since you haven't actually downloaded the software yet.

While Office sets itself up for the first time, you can choose to page through a few introductory slides. All told, it's not unlike how Windows 8 loads a primer on new gestures while the OS readies itself for the first time. Naturally, once they're fully installed the various Office apps appear as Live Tiles on the Start Screen, not as desktop shortcuts.

Once you've installed Office, you can sign in to your Microsoft account (or not -- in which case it's just a local copy). You can also choose the border that will appear on new Word documents and other files. In all, there are 14 of these themes, though there's also a "no background option" for people who find doodles of circles and circuits offensive. Not that we're pressuring you or anything, but they're really very subtle: they only take up a small patch of space on the fringe of the screen, and don't actually call much attention to themselves.

Office 2013

DNP Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium review

As crazy as this might sound, we don't plan on dwelling too much on the actual Office suite, just because we already wrote thousands of words on the subject back when it was first released. For a full run-down of the new features (plus dozens of screenshots), we'll direct you back to our preview, first published six months ago. For those of you who lack the attention span, though, we'll humor you with a quick recap. Notable new features in the suite include PDF editing in Word, a full-screen Reading Mode (great for tablets) and a behind-the-scenes Presenter View in PowerPoint. Touch Mode is exactly what it sounds like, which is to say it makes all the UI elements a little bigger and more touch-friendly -- not that it magically makes Excel convenient to use without a keyboard, per se. Resume Reading remembers exactly where you were in a document the last time you opened it, which is useful if you've been charged with editing a 40-page patent infringement brief or something equally tedious.

Even when the software was still in development we found it to be fast and stable, while the features themselves were intuitive to use.

By default, the various Office apps now save to SkyDrive, and you can always send someone a link to your work so they can read it in a browser. Adding online video to Word and PowerPoint files is much easier than it had been, and it's now possible to reply to comments in Track Changes. Flash Fill in Excel can predict what information should go in blank cells if the data is repetitive and follows a pattern. Finally, Outlook gets a feature called Peeks, which lets you hover to view your calendar and such without leaving the inbox. Meanwhile, so-called Social Connectors are plug-ins from services like LinkedIn.

For the most part, the software is the same as when we last tested it. And that's a good thing: even when the software was still in development we found it to be fast and stable, while the features themselves were intuitive to use. The only point of controversy might be the carryover of the Ribbon UI, which debuted all the way back in Office 2007, and which some people still haven't warmed up to.

There are a few new features, however, many of them subtle fit-and-finish sort of things. The icon for switching to Touch Mode has changed, and when you tap it you now get a pop-up menu that briefly explains the difference between that and mouse mode (the gist being that in Touch Mode there's no Ribbon menu, and the various UI elements are spaced farther apart). There's also a rotating group of templates, which vary depending on region and also the time of year. For instance, you won't see any Valentine's Day-related options in August, and you also won't see any sample Fourth of July party invites if you live outside the US. It's a smart idea, making these things timely and region-specific. We're not sure how many people actually use templates to begin with, but if you do, knock yourself out.

PowerPoint, meanwhile, has gotten a new transitions category called "Exciting," which includes some new animations. As you might have guessed, they're flashy transitions, sequences with names like "Curtains," "Origami" and "Paper Airplane" (they all are exactly what they sound like). What can we say? They're playful and call lots of attention to themselves, which is to say they probably won't be especially welcome at a board meeting. But just like with the templates, we're glad they're there for people who require a few more resources to truly express themselves.

Office Store

DNP Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium review

Now that Microsoft has dragged Office kicking and screaming into the cloud-computing era, it's doing something else to bring the software up to date: it's giving the suite its very own app store. The Office Store lives on office.com, and is accessible even to folks who don't have a subscription to Office 365 (meaning, it's fine if you just own Office 2013). So far, the store includes apps for Word, Excel, Outlook, Project and SharePoint (but not PowerPoint, strangely). If you like, you can sort apps by any of the above programs, which is how we prefer to go about it. Alternatively, though, you can browse through a page of features apps, too. Similar to the Windows Store, you can read user reviews and click through to see detailed system requirements. Installing an app is as easy as hitting an "Add" button, though you'll need to go through an extra step to make sure it appears in the Ribbon of whatever Office application uses the add-on.

What's interesting about browsing the store is that because no one really expected or asked for Office applications, it doesn't matter so much how many there are, or whether you've heard of any of them. (In other words, this isn't like demanding Instagram on Windows Phone 8 and accepting no substitutes.) In fact, there are some big names represented, including LinkedIn, which has a plug-in for Outlook, and Merriam-Webster, whose dictionary works across Word and Excel. We also found some other apps we could see ourselves using, like Bing News for Word and "Random Generator" for Excel.

Most of these are free, which creates a nice incentive for downloading a bunch and seeing what sticks. (As you can see, "nice and inoffensive" seems to be a running theme here, at least as far as the new features go.) A few of the apps do cost money, however, particularly some of the more sophisticated programs designed for enterprise users. If you're a developer reading this, Microsoft takes a 20 percent cut from application purchases, which matches the revenue split already in place for Windows applications.

DNP Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium review

To use the apps, just click the Insert in the Ribbon, followed by "Office Apps." Each one shows up as a pane along the right-hand side, which you can easily close by tapping an "X" button. You can open more than one app at once (as evidenced in the screenshot above) but be warned: for every app you open, you'll have less space to actually do your work. The apps in Word, for instance, line up side by side, causing the actual document to narrow. If you only open up one application, you'll still be able to type in Word without having to do any extra scrolling from side to side; that changes once you open a second app, though. All told, it's a minor inconvenience: just decide whether you need to be using Bing News at the moment, or if Merriam-Webster is more vital.

As for the apps themselves, they're exactly what they sound like, and that's a good thing. Bing News has a search bar into which you can type queries. Ditto for the dictionary app we tried, and LinguLab WordCloud. Web searches, definitions and everything else shows up in the same box where you performed the search so that you don't have to toggle over to IE 10 -- or any other program, for that matter. That alone makes these apps useful, though it helps that the information itself is clearly presented and comes from reliable sources.

Wrap-up

DNP Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium review

What can we say? Office 2013 is a top-notch product: fast, intuitive and feature-rich. All of the new features work as promised, and are easy to get the hang of. At the same time, since the UI is similar to the previous version, it should be easy to master if you're upgrading from Office 2010. Now it's true, there are various free alternatives out there, including cloud-based ones like Google Docs. Still, we're wary of steering all our readers there, because we know lots of folks are already comfortable using Office, or have come to rely on some of the more advanced features you can't get elsewhere. Assuming you don't have any interest in switching to a more basic suite, then, the real question is: does it make more sense to buy Office once for $139 and make do with one license? Or is it wiser in the long run to pay $100 every year for a subscription in exchange for five installations and ongoing software updates?

Obviously, the more computers you own, the more it makes sense to pay $100 a year for five activations. For example, buying five individual copies would cost $695 up front, as opposed to $600 for six years of service. Basically, you'd be saving money until that seventh year rolls around, and that's a long enough stretch that you'd get upgraded to Office 2017 in the interim. That said, the subscription model isn't for everyone. Many of the perks -- Skype minutes, extra SkyDrive storage -- seem like weak reasons to go with Office 365 if you're on the fence. Meanwhile, the Office Store is useful but it's not like you need a subscription to enjoy it. With all that in mind, if you own just one machine it might make sense to shell out $139 for a single license and not have to pay $100 on an annual basis. In short, then, Office itself is a polished product, but your decision on whether to get 2013 or 365 should mainly come down to how many computers you own. Almost everything else is beside the point.

The Super Bowl trophy: where Tiffany meets the NFL?

13 hrs.

Outside of the NHL's Stanley Cup, the Vince Lombardi Trophy might be the most recognized trophy in all of sports.

That much you probably already knew. What you probably didn't know: The prize for winning the Super Bowl is seven pounds of sterling silver, handcrafted by jewelry icon Tiffany.

Tiffany, a $4 billion company, has made every Lombardi Trophy dating back to 1967. As the story goes, the original design was sketched on a cocktail napkin in front of then-NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle.

Tiffany and the NFL might seem like an odd match, but it's not.

"The core mission of the company is to celebrate important moments in people's lives," said Tiffany executive Tom O'Rourke, who has overseen the company's trophy business for almost eight years. "I can't imagine a more important moment for an athlete than receiving the championship trophy on the field after a victory."

The silver itself has a street value of about $3,500. But, if you add in the high-end labor to make it (there is no?glue! and its symbolism, the value is a little more difficult to assess.

"I would tell you that the trophy itself is priceless," O'Rourke said. "Whatever monetary value is?assigned to the trophy doesn't accurately present the work the athletes have put into it."

The NFL is a customer and does pay for the trophy.

More from CNBC: The NFL's 10 best cheerleading squads 2013

Sources tell CNBC that the Tiffany trophy business, which includes everything from Major League Baseball to PGA golf, is modestly profitable but probably with smaller margins that the rest of its jewelry business.?

The NFL trophy is made in a workshop nestled into a distribution center in Parsippany, New Jersey.

"It's like the turn of the century with some of the machines and equipment used," O'Rourke noted.

As you might imagine, the size of the silver sheets is much larger than the average piece used for Tiffany jewelry. Actually, the only place the company has been able to procure sheets of high-grade silver big enough for the Vince Lombardi Trophy is in Italy.

After the silver arrives in New Jersey, the four-month process begins. Old-world terms like blacksmithing, spinning and chasing are following by the final polishes and engravings.

"It's made by local craftspeople that are employing crafts and skills from the 1800s," O'Rourke explained.

Then, the trophy goes to the Hall of Fame for display and returns for a touchup before journeying to the big game itself.

"It does come in a blue box," O'Rourke joked. "Actually, the reality is that the trophy will be in blue felt in a secure box ? not a traditional Tiffany box."

After the game, the winning team enjoys the trophy for a while before returning it to Tiffany for a cleaning and a final engraving.

Sometimes, it's a little worse for wear.

"The biggest issue is always the champagne," O'Rourke said.

The biggest party offender??Reportedly, the New Orleans Saints after winning in 2010.

New diabetes guidelines for children | Health X Pert Articles-Health ...

Doctors have a new set of guidelines when treating children diagnosed with type II diabetes. It's the first time recommendations have been issued for children aged 10 to 18, a sign that childhood obesity continues to have a broad impact. More children are developing type II diabetes "largely due to the increase in obesity and overweight (patients) in the pediatric population, as well as the overall population and the decreased activity we are seeing in our young people," said Dr. Janet Silverstein, co-author of the American Academy of Pediatrics ?guidelines and chief of endocrinology at the University of Florida's Shands Hospital. Type II diabetes affects 90% to 95% of the 26 million Americans with diabetes, while?it's still rare in children and adolescents,? it's being diagnosed more frequently among minority populations including American Indians, African-Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, and Asians/Pacific Islanders, according to the? Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Type I diabetes results from a rheumatoid-like autoimmune reaction in which the body attacks and destroys beta cells of the pancreas ? cells that normally produce insulin, according to CNN conditions expert Dr. Otis Brawley .? Type II diabetes is the result of the muscles and other tissues of the body developing a resistance to insulin produced by the beta cells of the pancreas. The pancreas first tries to overcome this resistance to insulin by making more insulin. The blood sugar goes up as a patient's body is no longer able to make enough insulin. Most patients with type II diabetes are overweight or obese; maintaining a normal weight and a healthy diet can prevent the disease, Brawley says. The guidelines?recommend doctors treat patients initially with insulin if they are unsure whether the child has type I or type II diabetes. Once a type II diagnoses is confirmed, insulin use can be stopped and the patient can be treated with metformin, Silverstein said. ?"Metformin is recommended as first-line therapy, along with a lifestyle modification program including nutrition and physical activity." The new guidelines are geared towards any medical professional who might come into contact with these children, Silverstein said, adding more research needs to be done to help children manage their treatment. There is still a lot of work to be done regarding diet and exercise, said Atlanta pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Shu, but it's good to provide doctors with a way to intervene.?Shu said she hopes this helps to prevent more serious complications from occurring later in life. "For both children and adolescents, the bottom line is lifestyle changes if they are overweight, working on nutrition and working on activity, try to get them to eat healthier, smaller portion sizes, to increase activity to 60 minutes a day," said Silverstein. She adds it's easier to get younger children than?adolescents?to implement behavior changes?and it's often necessary?to have a social worker or a psychologist?who has time to spend with kid and family to help. "No matter what medications we give, it won't work unless there are?other changes too." Type II diabetes can have a number of symptoms, Silverstein said.?Depending on the stage of the disease, diabetes can be picked up on a routine physical by finding glucose in the urine, but other signs include low energy, a discharge from the penis or a vaginal yeast infection, frequent urination or ?excess thirst. The guidelines are published in the February 2013 issue of Pediatrics and were released online Monday. Filed under: Children?s Health , Conditions , Diabetes , Diet and Fitness Tagged: Trisha Henry ? Steve Wozniak takes a bite out of Ashton Kutcher's Steve Jobs biopic

MONTREAL - Attention, all you people who are excited about the Steve Jobs biopic, starring Ashton Kutcher: First, you should have known better, considering Ashton?s involved. Second, Steve Wozniak, Jobs?s partner in the early days, says a clip from the movie gets it all wrong.

The picture is called jOBS (come to think of it, that annoying capitalization is another bad omen, isn?t it?), and this clip is floating around the interwebs. Woz, having seen it, told the website Gizmodo that he and Jobs ?never had such interaction and roles? as those shown in the excerpt.

?Not close ... I?m not even sure what it?s getting at ... (Our) personalities are very wrong although mine is closer ... Our relationship was so different than what was portrayed,? etc.

The movie is due out in April.

Jennifer Lawrence was reported the other day to have pneumonia, but that didn?t keep her away from Sunday?s Screen Actors Guild awards show. She might have wished she had stayed home, though, when her gown malfunctioned as she walked to the podium to collect her hardware for Silver Linings Playbook.

This wasn?t as shocking as it might have been: she stumbled, and her floor-length navy blue Dior gown came apart at a horizontal seam or connection, at mid-thigh level. She fixed it, somehow, and did her acceptance speech.

Police said they had not yet been in contact with Chris Brown.

By Marian Smith, Staff Writer, NBC News

Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown is being investigated following an alleged fight over a parking space in West Hollywood, police said early Monday.

Authorities responded to a call of a fight involving six males in Santa Monica Boulevard, the LA County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

"Deputies talked to witnesses who stated that Chris Brown and the victim were involved in an altercation over a parking space," the statement added. "The altercation allegedly led to Chris Brown punching the victim."

Brown had already left when officers arrived, police said.

Police said they had not yet been in contact with Brown. No arrests have been made.

AP Source: Titans interested in hiring Williams

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Gregg Williams may be a step closer to returning to the NFL after being suspended indefinitely for his role in the Saints' bounty program.

Titans coach Mike Munchak has talked with Williams and is interested in adding him to his Tennessee staff, said a person familiar with the situation. The person spoke Sunday to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the Titans do not discuss personnel moves until they are finalized.

Before the Titans could hire Williams, he must be reinstated by the league. Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him indefinitely for his role in the New Orleans Saints bounty program, and NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Sunday the league has not yet addressed Williams' potential reinstatement.

Munchak did not immediately answer a message left by the AP on Sunday. The Titans coach has not talked with the media about his team since the day after the season ended.

How quickly the league considers reinstating Williams may take at least a week with the San Francisco 49ers arriving in New Orleans on Sunday to kick off festivities leading up to the Feb. 3 Super Bowl.

Williams is the only coach or player who has yet to return to the NFL in the wake of the bounty scandal.

Goodell just lifted the suspension for New Orleans coach Sean Payton on Tuesday, nearly two weeks earlier than expected. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended for eight games and assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six. Four current or former Saints players were also suspended after an investigation found the club had a performance pool offering cash rewards for key plays, including big hits. The player suspensions eventually were overturned.

Williams was the Saints defensive coordinator from 2009-11 and was hired by St. Louis in January 2012 by former Titans coach Jeff Fisher before being suspended indefinitely in March 20112. Williams' son, Blake, also was on Fisher's staff as the Rams' linebacker coach ? but his contract was not renewed earlier this month.

Munchak has known Williams since 1990. Munchak was playing for the then-Houston Oilers when Williams became an assistant coach with the team. They also coached together with the Oilers; Munchak oversaw the offensive line starting in 1994 and Williams rose from defensive assistant to coaching special teams, then linebackers and finally defensive coordinator.

Williams left the Titans to become head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 2001 before becoming defensive coordinator with the Washington Redskins from 2004-07. He also was defensive coordinator in Jacksonville in 2008 before being hired by the Saints in 2009.

Williams also has a relationship with Munchak's current defensive coordinator, Jerry Gray. When Williams left for Buffalo, Gray went with him and served as Williams' defensive coordinator with the Bills.

Even though Gray currently has the job, the Titans' defense needs help and Munchak will be coaching for his job in 2013 after going 6-10 in his second season as head coach. One reason for the losing record was Tennessee's inability to stop anyone; the Titans set a franchise record allowing 471 points in 2012. The only change Munchak has made to his defensive staff was letting linebackers coach Frank Bush go and moving Chet Paralavecchio into the job from assisting with special teams.

In Williams' last season with the Titans, Tennessee ranked first in the NFL in fewest yards allowed, first in passing yards allowed and third in rushing defense. The Titans also set a franchise-record for fewest points allowed with 191 with an aggressive defense.

Berlusconi defends Mussolini for backing Hitler

ROME (AP) ? Former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi praised Benito Mussolini for "having done good" despite the Fascist dictator's anti-Jewish laws, immediately sparking expressions of outrage as Europe on Sunday held Holocaust remembrances.

Berlusconi also defended Mussolini for allying himself with Hitler, saying he likely reasoned that it would be better to be on the winning side.

The media mogul, whose conservative forces are polling second in voter surveys ahead of next month's election, spoke to reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony in Milan to commemorate the Holocaust.

In 1938, before the outbreak of World War II, Mussolini's regime passed the so-called "racial laws," barring Jews from Italy's universities and many professions, among other bans. When Germany's Nazi regime occupied Italy during the war, thousands from the tiny Italian Jewish community were deported to death camps.

"It is difficult now to put oneself in the shoes of who was making decisions back then," Berlusconi said of Mussolini's support for Hitler. "Certainly the (Italian) government then, fearing that German power would turn into a general victory, preferred to be allied with Hitler's Germany rather than oppose it."

Berlusconi added that "within this alliance came the imposition of the fight against, and extermination of, the Jews. Thus, the racial laws are the worst fault of Mussolini, who, in so many other aspects, did good."

More than 7,000 Jews were deported under Mussolini's regime, and nearly 6,000 of them were killed.

Outrage, along with a demand that Berlusconi be prosecuted for promoting Fascism, quickly followed his words.

Among those voicing condemnation were prominent Jewish figures abroad.

Mussolini "modeled his anti-Jewish laws after the Nazi Nuremberg Laws barring Jews from civil service," Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said in a statement.

"It is the height of revisionism to try to reinstate an Italian dictator who helped legitimize and prop up Hitler as a 'reincarnated good guy,'" said the rabbi, whose organization monitors anti-Semitic incidents worldwide.

Berlusconi's praise of Mussolini constitutes "an insult to the democratic conscience of Italy," said Rosy Bindi, a center-left leader. "Only Berlusconi's political cynicism, combined with the worst historic revisionism, could separate the shame of the racist laws from the Fascist dictatorship."

Italian laws enacted following the country's disastrous experience in the war forbid the defense of Fascism. A candidate for local elections, Gianfranco Mascia, pledged that he and his supporters will present a formal complaint on Monday to Italian prosecutors, seeking to have Berlusconi prosecuted.

Hours later, Berlusconi issued a statement saying he "regretted" that he didn't make clear in his earlier comments that his historical analyses "are always based on condemnation of dictatorships," the Italian news agency LaPresse reported.

He also contended that the political left was trying to exploit his comment about Mussolini for election campaign fodder.

Advocating aggressive nationalism, Mussolini used brutish force and populist appeal evoking ancient Rome's glories to achieve and keep his dictatorial grip on power, starting in the early '20s and lasting well into World War II. His Fascist "blackshirt" loyalists cracked down on dissidents, through beatings and jailings.

He encouraged big families to propagate the Italian population, established a sprawling state economy and erected monumental buildings and statues to evoke ancient Rome. Mussolini sought to impose order on a generally individualistic-minded people, and Italians sometimes note trains ran on time during Fascism.

With dreams of an empire, he sent Italian troops on missions to attack or occupy foreign lands, including Ethiopia and Albania. Eventually, Italian military failures in Africa and in Greece fostered rebellion among Fascist officials, and in 1943 he was placed under arrest by orders of the Italian king. His end came at the vengeful hands of partisan fighters, who shot him and his mistress, and left their bodies to hang in a Milan square in April 1945.

Berlusconi's former government allies have included political heirs to neo-fascist movements admiring Mussolini.

In 2010, he told world leaders at a Paris conference that he had been reading Mussolini's journals, and years earlier Berlusconi had claimed that Mussolini "never killed anyone."

Berlusconi is running in Feb. 24-25 Parliamentary elections and has repeatedly changed his mind on whether he is seeking a fourth term as premier. Monti is also running, but polls put him far behind front-runner Pier Luigi Bersani, a center-left leader who supported Monti's austerity measures to save Italy from the Eurozone debt crisis.

Polls show about one-third of eligible voters are undecided.

Interview with Fan Filmmaker Chris Notarilie of Blinky Productions ...

This is part of an ongoing series of interviews, spotlights, previews and reviews focusing on the wonderfully diverse and meta-textual world of ?Fan Discourse.?? In other words, this is where I get to delve into my geekier side and turn the focus on the creations, work and weirdness of a group that is generally not thought of as artists so much as they are thought of as consumers?the fans.? In this article, I turn my focus on Filmmaker Chris Notarilie who specializes in films that involve superheroes, superheroines, villians and even horror movie monsters.? Chris and I first spoke a few years ago when I was writing for ComicBloc and Online Webmagazine specializing in comic books and other fan-related issues.

Xavier: Hi, Chris!? Okay, so to start off can you tell me a little bit about yourself, how you got started and how long you have been working, things like that?

Chris Notarilie: I am a filmmaker. I started truly making movies in January 2004 when I made a short film for a contest for Wizard Magazine. It was called Baby Punisher. I didn?t win, but that was truly the 1st film I completed from beginning to end.? Ever since then, I?ve just kept doing what I love doing- making more movies.

Xavier: You are a very hands-on kind of filmmaker, meaning that you are pretty much involved at every level of the process, or if not at least know how to do practically everything that you need to make a good film.? How did this come about? What is your working philosophy?

Chris Notarilie: I am very very, very hands on.? If I could clone myself to make up a production crew, I would. I believe the more I do myself, the closer to my vision it will be in the end.? That and I?m also very paranoid and have been burned in the past when trusting other people to do the work for me. My philosophy, if you want something done right, do it yourself.

Xavier: Looking at your American Excess clip, you do a take on Martin Scorsese and the type of cinema verite?, which we find in say a movie like Mean Streets.? So, I have to ask who are some of your inspirations, who do you look up to as a filmmaker, writer and editor.

Chris Notarilie:? Robert Rodriguez, John Carpenter, Michael Mann, Tony Scott, Martin Scorsese and Sam Raimi.? They are my favorite directors and all inspire me in their own ways.

Xavier: You do a variety of different kinds of film everything from horror, comedic bits like the Blue Beetle PSA?s, full length original features like The Protector; but Comic inspired movies seem to be your forte?.? What drew you to fan-made filmmaking?

Chris Notarilie: I wanted the attention. I?m like a little kid craving the spot light. I want people to know who I am and what I do so I make fan films to grab their attention. After they see my fan work, if they like it, they tend to stick around and check out my original work on my site too. It?s all part of my master plan. Evil, isn?t it?

Xavier: Definitely, as I say, Prime Evil, evil that is divisible only by you and the number 1.? Have you found any limitations working with copyrighted characters?

Chris Notarilie: Not yet- THANK GOD. Though I can?t sell anything that?s copyrighted- I?m still content with just making. I?m more concerned with exposure than I am with making money. Don?t get me wrong, money is nice too, but it will come to me when my time is ready.

Right now, I must spread the word of Blinky. That is my sole mission right now.

Xavier: Have you had anyone official have to ?talk? to you about using a certain character, name or likeness?

Chris Notarilie: I?ve spoken to various official and creative entities, ranging from Warner Bros execs to comic artists to regular fans. Everyone has their own opinion, but for the most part, people have been pretty supportive. Though the execs aren?t particularly supportive of my efforts, they are grateful I am not selling my work nor am I making them look bad. So- so far, so good.

Xavier: What are the pluses of using characters that people already know and identify with?

Chris Notarilie: You already have a fanbase you can immediately tap into rather than creating one from scratch. Plus, it?s like being in a secret club; only you and a few other people in your inner circle know the subject matter.? This makes it even better when you see a fan film loaded with inside jokes that only you and fellow fans get. It?s nice and I like doing that in my films.

Xavier: There doesn?t seem to be as many Marvel or independent comic company?s characters in your films; do you have a fondness for DC characters?

Chris Notarilie: Yes I do prefer DC over Marvel, but don?t let that fool you. I just haven?t gotten around to Marvel yet.? But I will. I see a Deadpool or Spiderman related movie happening somewhere down the line. No promises yet. But something will happen. (And has happened since then check out the website!)

Xavier: I feel the same way about DC; something about the characters just clicks with me.? Your work goes back and forth between almost slapstick humor to being deadly serious. How do you work and how do you decide whether you are going to do a serious movie or a comedy?

Chris Notarilie: That always depends on who I?m making a movie about and who?s in it. There are just some characters I CANNOT take seriously. And for that, I make them a comedy. Others, they are serious or the straight man in any joke. For them, I can make dead serious films.

Take Catwoman and Power Girl. I just can?t see Catwoman wise cracking- EVER.? Power Girl on the other hand- yes. She has a comment about everything.? But looking at it the other way around.? Catwoman works better in a serious setting due to her violently mean streak where as Power Girl doesn?t fit so well.? She?s just so easy to make fun of and has so often been the butt of many jokes- plus she?s so strong, she can?t haul off and maim someone, it just wouldn?t work.? Catwoman on the other hand, she has no powers so she doesn?t have to pull her punches. Like I said, it depends on who I choose to make a movie about.

Xavier: How do you cast these films? Who are these folks?? Do you do open auditions?

Chris Notarilie: I cast on Craigslist and various other casting sites.? Everyone is a professional actor and I cast them based on ability as well as accuracy to the portrayal of the character. I just happen to have been super lucky lately with my actor?s likenesses to their characters as well as talent.

Xavier: What sorts of things do you have planned for the future?

Chris Notarilie: Little broad don?t you think? (Chuckles.) Well for starters- world domination, as well as a plethora of feature films, all the while continuing to make fan films. I love fan films and even if I become famous, I won?t stop. They?re just too fun.

Xavier: You?re right that was kind of broad.? How have things like the Internet, YouTube helped or hindered your career?

Chris Notarilie: They are amazing tools. I can reach so many more audiences via the internet now, then I ever could have at any other point in time. This day and age rocks. Viva Youtube!

Xavier: Are you a fan of any of the other fan filmmakers out there? Do you have any favorite films?

Chris Notarilie: Robert Tovani- director of Robin (2005). Nick Murphy-director of Tombe Raider (Tears of the Dragon). I know I?m probably forgetting a few people, but those guys are at the top of my list right now. And I like them not just because of their films, but because of who they are as people. They aren?t jaded or snobby. They are regular guys who happened to make good movies too.? And that?s what I am and I appreciate meeting more people like that.

Xavier: Looking particularly at fight scenes, I can see how a fight scene in say Catwoman Principles is different than say the scenes between Power Girl and Bizarro in I?m Power Girl, Dammit! Are fight scenes a particular challenge and how has your craft grown with time?

Chris Notarilie: I have friends who are stunt men and martial artists; they do the task of working out the fights for me, which is a real load off my back. I appreciate it because it allows me to focus more on the shooting of the film instead. Though, I did choreograph the simple fight in PG2. But it?s no comparison to my other film?s fights. But as a filmmaker, I do believe I should learn the fight too. I know all the combos and what to call them. I feel by learning the fight, it will help me get where I need to be in during the fight to get THAT shot.

Xavier: Speaking of Power Girl, you have mentioned here and there that you are planning a movie based on the JSA, my personal favorite team.? How has that come about and can you give us any hints as to what you might have in store with this film?

Chris Notarilie: I decided to do it after I realized I had already made half the team?s costumes. I have Power Girl, Hourman and Wildcat. I was also planning a Mr. Terrific movie, but then I figured, screw it, lets do JSA all the way.? The story will be a 30-minute TV pilot. The idea is to eventually pitch it. It will be set now and I will be updating certain parts of the JSA?s history to fit better, but the character origins will be the same.? And I will also share the team?s roster:

Mr. Terrific (Michael Holt)

Green Lantern (Alan Scott)

The Flash (Jay Garrick)

Wildcat (Ted Grant)

Hourman (Rick Tyler)

Dr. Midnite (Pieter Cross)

Power Girl (Karen Starr)

They will be facing Vandal Savage and a few select members of the Injustice Society.

In my story, Vandal is ready to rule the world once more; his last true reign was during WW2 with Hitler if I remember correctly. Anyhoo, in my story, he is preparing to take over the world, but when he gets wind of Mr. Terrific reforming the JSA after 20 years of no team, he approaches them and says basically, they are only mortals. Though they may try now, sooner or later they all will die, and when that happens, he will then rule- one way or another. He?s just going to wait it out. But should they cross him, he will ?Bring it?.

I?m going for a more calm Vandal who realizes his immortality is the key to his success. So long as he knows he can live forever, he will never lose his cool. If he can?t beat his enemies, all he has to do is wait things out and eventually, they?ll die in time.

Xavier: Very interesting, I?ve always wondered why in all media Immortals seem to have the same motivations as us mere mortals, it?s very cool that you are giving this a more realistic feel and taking into account how time and position would have an effect on a characters point of view.

How are films like Bitter Sweet and The Protector different than some of your other work?

Chris Notarilie: They are originals. That?s the big difference, also they deal with different issues. Bitter Sweet is a psychological mind fucker, where as the Protector is a heart-warming drama about life. With those kinds of films I can explore different sides of my favorite craft and that?s always nice.

Xavier: What are the tools of your trade? Do you work in video? Film? What sorts of programs do you use?? How did you get the Flash to go whizzing by that policeman in The Flash (Speeding Ticket)?

Chris Notarilie: I shoot on HDV video. Edit on FCP. The flash effect was just a drawing of blur lines I made on Photoshop and superimposed them onto the footage in FCP. It was so easy even I said DUH! The key to being a great filmmaker is to be able to pull of difficult things and make them look effortless all the while not breaking your back doing it.

Xavier: Other than world domination, what would be your dream project?

Chris Notarilie: Doing a Blue Beetle and Catwoman feature for scripts that I have written. And of course, making sure Hollywood hasn?t bastardized my idea. I want to make something on par with Batman Begins but for Blue Beetle and Catwoman.

Other projects I would like to tackle are as follows: Superhero teams- JSA, perhaps I?d expand my pilot into a feature. I?m also interested in an Infinite Crisis film. Something with Power Girl, and of course- I know no one but me has the balls to do as accurately as it should be- the Death of Superman WITHOUT Brandon Routh. I would turn to Stan Winston studios to help me out with Doomsday, and Troublemaker?s Robert Rodriguez to help me in producing. I think the death can be a 3-picture deal. Part 1, the death, part 2 the reign and part 3 the real return. If I could make such a series like that, I could die a happy man.

Xavier: What would a full-length motion picture that is not based on anything fan-film inspired be like if it was done by you?

Chris Notarilie: I would like to do a full-length version of The Protector one day. He?s a great character and I?ve created a very interesting and action packed life for him. If I made a movie about him, I think it would revolutionize comics. The Protector is a character from the golden age era and he believes in the morals from that time.? He?s not corrupted like many heroes of today are.? If I made a movie about a character that pure, I think it would speak volumes to the audiences of today and hopefully set some new higher standards in human compassion.? I seriously have a lot of problems with the attention span and lack of respect from many of today?s audiences. They can be very vulgar, ignorant and unintelligible and I would love to help change all that for the better.? And if The Protector can do that, then tell me where I can sign up.

Xavier: Finally, where does Blinky come from? Who is he and what is the significance of the name?

Chris Notarilie:? Blinky the Bunny. His true origins are yet to be disclosed to the public. Perhaps some day, when he has his own movie, he will tell you who he is and where he came from. Till then, he won?t let me say.

Xavier: Thank you so much for the interview Chris, it was a real pleasure talking to you and good luck with all of your future endeavors.? I?m sure that we will be hearing a lot from you in the future and I look forward to seeing the JSA pilot and can?t wait to see The Protector made into a full-length major motion picture.

Chris Notarilie: You are very welcome.

Three Reasons Restaurants Choose to Outsource Their Social ...

social media for restaurants

If you work in the restaurant industry, you know that you are always busy. Who has time to check Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest, etc. every single day, let alone use these tools effectively to market your restaurant. Restaurants need to outsource their social media management and they have to do it with an experience company is restaurant social media management.

Restaurants have long been considered local businesses, however with the advent of social media and the ubiquitous nature of the Internet, most people are looking online to decide what to eat. Restaurants need to take charge of their online presence to advertise and to also hear what your customers are saying about you.

This is not a new idea. Restaurant owners and managers have probably already outsourced their website design, advertising, and printing. Why not leave social media management to a competent and experienced company? If you?re not convinced, look at these top three reasons outlined below.

1. Content Is King and Time Is Money

In social media marketing, content is king. What we mean by that is twofold. Firstly, you need a lot of content even to be heard out there. You need to be on all of the top social media websites in order to even rank on Google and other search engines. Secondly, your content has to be an original mix of entertaining, informative, and self-promoting. If it isn?t, you run the risk of your fans losing interest in you.

2. It?s Pretty Cheap

Social media management is, luckily for me, a full-time job. This means that if you choose to do this on your spare time, it simply will not be as influential or effective. Also, think about it this way: social media management is an opportunity cost. Think about all you can accomplish at your restaurant satisfying your customers instead of sitting at a computer trying to get familiar with social media management. When considering social media management, compare the potential revenue you can generate by outsourcing and having more free time to focus on your business.

3. You won?t forget why you?re in the restaurant business in the first place

You?re in the business because you love food in one way or other. Stick to that instead of getting bogged down by the technicalities of social media management and your company will shine.

Social media management is a huge investment of time. It needs to be done right and in order for your efforts to be worthwhile, you need to have someone on your team who knows what they are doing. We are here for that reason. We not only work in the industry, we live and breathe this stuff and we are constantly growing and changing with the industry. Sort of how you are with the restaurant industry.

eSmart Tax Premium

For the last several years, we've reviewed a tax preparation website called CompleteTax. Unlike its competitors, this site did not begin its life as a desktop product; it launched on the Web. CompleteTax's parent company, CCH, has been in the business of supporting taxpayers since 1913, the year the tax code was created. CCH analyzes tax law and publishes voluminous resources. The product still exists, but it's now called eSmart tax?I reviewed eSmart Tax Premium.

The app is now supported by Liberty Tax Service, which has built 4,000 local offices in the U.S. and Canada since its launch in 1997. This tax preparation franchise had used the CompleteTax framework for two years, but this year it is playing a leading role in its website operations. If you need support this year, you'll be dealing with Liberty Tax Service, which also backs your return and e-files it.

I reviewed the Premium version, which costs the same as its competition's Deluxe versions, and is $10 cheaper than last year. If you plan to file a Schedule C, you have to spring for this top-of-the-line offering.

eSmart Tax, as you might expect, provides accurate, comprehensive coverage of the most commonly-faced tax situations, as well as several more uncommon ones. Like the others reviewed here, it asks an exhaustive list of questions as it tries to find all of your income, deductions and credits. eSmart Tax is comparable to its competitors in that sense, but lags behind TurboTax in terms of its user interface and review process. The site's overall help system, though, rivals the leader's; it's at least as comprehensive and context-sensitive.?

A Simple Process
eSmart Tax moves through your return in a fashion similar to its competitors. It gathers your personal information upfront (address, Social Security numbers, dependents, etc.). Here and throughout the tax prep process, you're presented with lengthy lists of questions meant to both feed information to your return and determine which elements of the site should be emphasized. These are yes or no questions, like, "Did you have any deductions such as the following?" (mortgage interest medical expenses, etc.) During this interview process, you'll often have to enter information in fields or select from list of options.

You don't ever see your 1040 shaping up as you go along. But eSmart Tax takes your responses, does any necessary calculating and deposits the information in the correct fields on your return. It really is like sitting in a tax preparer's office answering questions and providing the backup documentation required.

When you've answered every pertinent question, eSmart Tax analyzes your return and either suggests or insists on changes, depending on the issue. Once it's satisfied, you can transfer necessary information into a state return and complete it in the same fashion. After you've breathed a sigh of relief, you can print and/or e-file your return (the latter is recommended, and will be required someday).

Multiple Navigational Options
Simple, obvious navigational tools help you move through the interview. Tabs at the top of the screen display the site's primary sections: Personal, Employment, Deductions, Investments, Retirement, Miscellaneous, and Filing Options. Sub-tabs beneath each further divide those sections into smaller bites.

You can use these for navigation, but you're less likely to miss something critical if you progress through the site using the "Previous" and "Continue" buttons on each screen. These advance you forward or back one page. The "Quick Navigation" link takes you to another option. It presents a tree-like outline of the entire site's screens; you can click on one link to move directly to that page. These are all standard conventions that eSmart Tax's competitors employ.

CompleteTax revamped the user interface a couple of years ago, but the site still lags behind its competition in this area. It doesn't look like a polished, state-of-the-art website yet. Some elements look great, like the main tabs and buttons, but the work windows could use freshening up.

Healthy Exercise and Fitness: Water-Based Exercise - Health Benefits

Swimming is the fourth most popular sports activity in the United States and a good way to get regular aerobic physical activity . Just two and a half hours per week of aerobic physical activity, such as swimming, bicycling, or running can decrease the risk of chronic illnesses. This can also lead to improved health for people with diabetes and heart disease. Swimmers have about half the risk of death compared with inactive people. People report enjoying water-based exercise more than exercising on land. They can also exercise longer in water than on land without increased effort or joint or muscle pain.

Water-Based Exercise and Chronic Illness

Water-based exercise can help people with chronic diseases. For people with arthritis, it improves use of affected joints without worsening symptoms. People with rheumatoid arthritis have more health improvements after participating in hydrotherapy than with other activities. Water-based exercise also improves the use of affected joints and decreases pain from osteoarthritis.

Water-Based Exercise and Mental Health

Water-based exercise improves mental health. Swimming can improve mood in both men and women. For people with fibromyalgia, it can decrease anxiety and exercise therapy in warm water can decrease depression and improve mood. Water-based exercise can improve the health of mothers and their unborn children and has a positive effect on the mothers? mental health. Parents of children with developmental disabilities find that recreational activities, such as swimming, improve family connections.

Water-Based Exercise and Older Adults

Water-based exercise can benefit older adults by improving the quality of life and decreasing disability. It also improves or maintains the bone health of post-menopausal women.

?A Good Choice

Exercising in water offers many physical and mental health benefits and is a good choice for people who want to be more active. When in the water, remember to protect yourself and others from illness and injury by practicing healthy and safe swimming behaviors.

Don Tapscott: Going Down the Road -- In a Car That Drives Itself

I've just come from an amazing discussion by some brilliant people about how connected vehicles and transportation systems will transform mobility. The discussion focused on how self-driving cars will improve road safety and traffic flow and reduce transportation's carbon footprint.

The idea is that if cars on the roadway can connect with one another and with the roadway itself, there will be fewer accidents and the system will function more efficiently. Cars will drive themselves, and the driver is freed up to do other things. The president of UPS's international division said his drivers typically make 200 deliveries a day. If a UPS truck were smart enough to drive itself, the driver could ready the package for delivery and process the paperwork while enroute. Driver efficiency would rise and fuel consumption would drop.

Imagine your car taking you from your driveway at home to your office's parking lot without you having to touch the wheel. It would be commuter heaven. Long drive times would not be as oppressive now that you could do other things during transit, such as read a book, surf the web, or watch a university lecture. And since the cars of tomorrow will be electric, the concern for exhaust fumes will have gone away.

Europe has been funding research on self-driving cars for more than a decade under a program called Intelligent Co-operative Systems. The project's website catalogues the incredible array of benefits when such a system is fully introduced. They include increased road network capacity, reduced congestion and pollution, shorter and more predictable journey times, improved traffic safety for all road users, and lower vehicle operating costs.

Additional benefits are more efficient logistics, improved management and control of the road network (both urban and inter-urban), increased efficiency of the public transport systems, and better and more efficient response to hazards, incidents and accidents.

Google is also leading the way in research. Google-designed self-driving cars are used in the search engine giant's street-level photos of cities around the world. The project was put in motion by former Google vice-president Sebastian Thrun, now director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and co-inventor of Google Street View. He was one of the session's panelists.

Google's driverless cars have logged more than 480,000 kilometres without the technology ever being responsible for an accident. One car had an accident while a driver was controlling the vehicle, and a second car was hit from behind at a stoplight.

Technology journalist Jeff Jarvis in the audience asked what the timeline is for self-driving cars, and Mr. Thrun said within five years. Mr. Thrun, a great evangelist for self-driving cars, said the first time in the vehicle is exhilarating. Within 10 minutes people are willing to trust the car totally. In normal driving the car's controls are better than the best human drivers. Passengers feel uncomfortable when the human driver takes over.

But accidents will be sure to happen, and the question that was put to the Davos audience was: Would the citizens of your country accept some level of fatalities in accidents caused by "technology failure" attributed to a centrally controlled system, in exchange for fewer overall transportation fatalities provided by reduced human error? Only 46 percent said yes, while 54 percent said no. This prompted an interesting discussion on technology failures on planes and trains.

The audience was also asked: Autonomous transportation systems require a free flow of information between transportation providers. Will governments accept facilitating and/or managing the process and liabilities associated with this information exchange? The audience was divided between 53 percent Yes and 47 percent No.
